Nowruz and the Goldfish: Celebrating New Life Through Play

Nowruz, meaning “New Day” in Persian culture, has been celebrated for over 3,000 years. Marking the first day of spring and the renewal of nature, Nowruz promotes values of peace, solidarity across generations, family togetherness, reconciliation, and neighborliness. It’s a tradition that nurtures cultural diversity and friendship among communities.

During Nowruz, families set a Haftsin table featuring seven symbolic items representing life, health, happiness, prosperity, joy, patience, and beauty. The goldfish and its bowl of water symbolize movement, life, and the cyclical nature of time. The goldfish also marks the last month of the Persian calendar (Esfand), and turning the bowl signifies the changing of the year. Each Haftsin element embodies a meaningful concept, bringing the freshness of new life—just as the Earth renews itself in spring.

Inspired by the book “The New Year’s Goldfish” by Solmaz Parveen, illustrated by Tata Bobokhidze, we followed the story of Keyan, who could barely contain his excitement while helping his family prepare for the celebrations and bringing home a goldfish for the Haftsin. To extend the story through play, we created a sensory bin filled with water mixed with Colorations metallic paint from Discount School Supply. At the base of the fishbowls & iridescent geometric shapes, Children discovered loose parts in blue shades, and an abundance of golden fish.

Through water play, sensory exploration, and loose parts, children deepened their understanding of the story, the Haftsin traditions, and the values of Nowruz, all while building language, comprehension, and social-emotional skills through learning through play. This hands-on experience allowed the children to connect with a centuries-old cultural celebration in a joyful and meaningful way.
