Invitation to Explore Salvador Dalí 3 Ways

Salvador Dalí is the Artist of the Month and we have been reading so many wonderful books to learn about the Spanish Surrealist artist renowned for his technical skill, precise draftsmanship, and the striking and bizarre images in his work.

Today we explored three of his art works.

1.Lobster Telephone Still Life Painting: We provided images of his actual art work, 3-D Phone & Lobster, paint, brushes, and paper. The children were invited to do a still life painting of the unexpected combination of objects.

2.The Persistence of Memory STEM Small World Play: We provided objects & loose parts that were similar to the dreamworld in which common objects are deformed and displayed in a bizarre way and the children were invited to create their own persistence of memory.

3. Ship with Butterfly Sails Art: We provided a ship made out of recycled boxes and invited the children to paint it, followed by adorning it with butterflies just like the painting.

Invitations where children are exposed to different types of artists opens a child's mind to the many ways of creating art. When children learn about diverse types of art the more well rounded and creative they become. Art is a fundamental component of early childhood education therefore continuous exposure leads to seeing the world in different ways and learning about all the beautiful forms of art. Opportunities for creativity reinforces the children's ability to engage with the world in new and novel ways, which promotes inquiry, reflection and critical-thinking skills.
